Indie Game Discovery Roundup 039

The Indie Game Discovery Roundup is a list of indie games just announced, upcoming, very recently released, or hidden gems that caught our eye that we would like you to know about.

Overland, Super Dodgeball Beats, Blasphemous, Untitled Goose Game, Freedom Finger

Overland

Overland, developed by Finji, is a game that I’ve kept track of for quite some time, patiently waiting to learn when it will be released. It’s a roguelike, post-apocalyptic, turn-based, road trip game, where you will be faced with a random decisions for survival. This definitely looks like a game inspired by Oregon Trail and that’s not a bad thing!  Additionally, Overland catches my eye with its graphics style, a 3D eye-popping visualization that gives it a unique dark and lonely apocalyptic presentation that sets itself apart from other games. Overland is a game I definitely can’t wait to play, as this roguelike experience will probably give plenty hours of survival fun, so don’t overlook it!

Super Dodgeball Beats

Super Dodgeball Beats, developed by FinalBoss, is a game that I included in this roundup because it just seems like a unique game that I can’t compare it to much of anything else I’m familiar with. This is a rhythm based experience that uses dodgeball as a competitive visual for going up against opponents, even though the rhythm elements are fairly straightforward. The variables of the experience are power ups and items that can change the momentum of a match. This does have local multiplayer, while also containing a single player ‘Championship mode’ for a unique experience. Super Dodgeball Beats is definitely a change of pace for games you are used to seeing and definitely warrants you to take a look at it!.

Blasphemous

Blasphemous, developed by The Game Kitchen, is a 2D, Souls-like, metroidvania, action-platformer that meshes two different genres together. Playing as The Penitent One, it is up to you to free the land of Cvstodia from a foul curse, The Miracle. Blasphemous has an interesting art style, including an interesting ‘tinman’-esque appearance of The Penitent One. I played a little bit of a demo of this and it is definitely a unique experience with different items and skill choices to customize your gameplay. It is definitely a challenging game and if you enjoyed games like Death’s Gambit and Salt & Sanctuary then Blasphemous may be up your alley. This is a very overlooked game that may be a sleeper 2019 hit game for those that enjoy the genre.

Untitled Goose Game

Untitled Goose Game, developed by House House, is a game that was announced a while ago that I kept tabs on. Interestingly, I always thought Untitled Goose Game was just a placeholder name and never imagined it would be the final title! What drew my interest to this game is the art style and the fact that this is a game centered around goose stealth. The art style is visually pleasing, featuring interesting gameplay that I have no idea where the game is going to go with the goose gameplay. Everything about Untitled Goose Game is totally indie and is a reason why I enjoy indie games because this type of concept could never be a AAA game. Untitled Goose Game is a game I can’t wait to play to see how this goose gameplay actually works out.

Freedom Finger

Freedom Finger, developed by Wide Right Interactive, is a shoot’em and punch’em up side-scroller that I just couldn’t resist from putting in my indie game discovery roundup. Freedom Finger features 36 levels of wacky cartoon action involving your pointer finger, and yes, even the middle finger if you choose that mode. This genre is usually not for me, but a game as wacky as this with an excellent soundtrack is tough to resist. Freedom Finger is also very beautifully drawn and animated, which helps to bring all the wacky elements together including the finger. If this is your genre definitely check it out Freedom Finger, as it looks like a fun and interesting experience.
