Indie Game Discovery Roundup 041
The Indie Game Discovery Roundup is a list of indie games just announced, upcoming, very recently released, or hidden gems that caught my eye that I would like for you to know about.
Felix The Reaper, Valfaris, Kine, MageQuit, The Bradwell Conspiracy
Felix The Reaper
Felix The Reaper, developed by Kong Orange, is a game I’ve had on my radar since it was announced. This is a puzzle adventure game that uses dancing as a vehicle to solve puzzles, as you have to turn the sun and shift shadows to create your pathway. This is a love story of about Felix, who has to navigate through The Ministry of Death to try to reach the human world as a field reaper in order impress Betty The Maiden from The Ministry of Life Felix believes that dancing and making sure people die will get him true love. This is an interesting premise of a game, but not until recently did I see gameplay, which is very nicely drawn and colorful. Kong Orange also really invested in making sure the dancing was well done, which you can see via the Steam page. Not everyday do you see a puzzle game with such an interesting concept like this, so I had to include it in my roundup. Don’t forget to check out Felix The Reaper, as this clearly has potential to be a hit indie gem of 2019 with the great concept.
Release Date: October 17, 2019
Platforms: PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox Game Pass, and Xbox One

Valfaris
Valfaris, developed by Steel Mantis, is a game I’ve known about for a long time, so I was very pleased to find out it finally had release dates! Valfaris is a 2D action-platformer with heavy metal as the soundtrack by former Celtic Frost guitarist, Curt Victor Bryant. The trailer really does sell the game in itself, as you can not only hear the heavy metal jamming, but see the beautiful pixel art of this game set in dark space with plenty of gore. Playing as Therion, son of Valfaris, you have to return to the fortress of Valfaris to challenge the evil that now consumes the fortress. The gameplay is full of action making you think of Contra, and although there are other games with similar gameplay, there is something special about the quality of Valfaris that clearly exceeds other games that you can easily see in the trailer. Do not overlook Valfaris, as this may be one of the best indie games of 2019 for the genre.

Kine
Kine, developed by Gwen Frey, is a puzzle game that immediately emits charm, which is rare for puzzle games. Kine is a very vibrant and musical game centered around three machines, Guide Euler, Quat, and Roo, as they try to form a band. As seen in the trailer, the puzzles seem very unique and different than any other puzzle games I’ve seen, as using instruments to extend and retract is a unique form of movement. The puzzle aspect alone would be good, but the art and color presentation in association with the music is what will really attract you. Kine is definitely a puzzle game to check it out, as it is definitely one of the more unique puzzle indie games to release in 2019.
Release Date: October 17, 2019
Platforms: PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One

MageQuit
MageQuit, developed by Bowlcut Studios, was selected for this indie game discovery roundup because it’s a very unique online brawler game centered around using spells in a draft format. With at least 42 spells, the goal is to defeat other wizards to grow your beard in a top-down battle and draft spells between rounds to try to be the wizard with the longest beard in the end. This is another game that would only ever be an indie game, and puts a smile on my face to see something so out of the box like this. MageQuit has very flexible online matchmaking whether with friends or solo, plus local play, in teams or free for all. MageQuit is a game that you should at least check out, as the game has one of the best concepts I’ve covered in indie games for 2019.
Release Date: October 9, 2019
Platforms: PC and Xbox One

The Bradwell Conspiracy
The Bradwell Conspiracy, developed by Brave Plan, is another puzzle game with a great concept as you find yourself trapped in a hidden underground complex after an explosion at the Stonehenge Museum fundraiser. In this first person narrative experience, you will have to take photographs to send to another survivor trapped somewhere else to get help in order to escape while also using a 3D-printing game mechanic to solve puzzles. There is a lot of great creative talent behind this game (check the Steam page), including Austin Wintory (Journey), who’is creating the soundtrack. The Bradwell Conspiracy may be the closest game to Portal in terms concept that I’ve seen released, as this is a very intriguing puzzle narrative experience that you should definitely check out and not overlook!
