Chicory: A Colorful Tale is the new game being developed by Greg Lobanov, also the developer of Wandersong, my favorite game of 2018. I was lucky to enough to get my hands on a press demo and I was thrilled by what I experienced.
Chicory: A Colorful Tale is a game about a dog that finds himself as the wielder of a special magically paintbrush. It’s up to you to take care of it in the absence of Chicory. The demo that was provided gave a good snapshot of what the game is about, as you can color and remove colors from the environment, with that mechanic also being a puzzle mechanic for exploration. The beginning of the demo allowed me to design a shirt, which I can wear or choose not to. I was amazed just how the game felt like a coloring book, as I had access to many different colors and certain keys or button presses helped change the brush size to paint larger areas quicker with ease. The color choices themselves seemed to not matter much, as the game’s premise appears to just be colored versus not colored to get past areas and puzzles.
By the end of the demo I reached a boss, which gave me some Undertale vibes, as the fight was completely different gameplay compared to everything else presented previous as I was going from screen to screen to get to that point. Greg Lobanov did so well with Wandersong in creating memorable supporting characters that I can easily see that same great development here in Chicory: A Colorful Tale, but I would say the presentation in Chicory also gave me Undertale vibes in the presentation so far.
Greg Lobanov is joined by Lena Raine, known for her award-winning composition in Celeste, among others.
The Chicory: A Colorful Tale demo is only available to the press, but you can check out the game yourself in the Indie Megabooth (641) at PAX West 2019.
You can also support Chicory: A Colorful on Kickstarter for the next 26 days.
