Indie Game Discovery Roundup 016

Week of August 13, 2018

The Indie Game Discovery Roundup is a list of indie games just announced, upcoming. very recently released, or hidden gems that caught our eye that we would like you to know about.

Sword Legacy Omen, Donut County, Forged Battalion, The King’s Bird, Evergarden

Sword Legacy Omen

Sword Legacy Omen is a game that just recently discovered, but a game that I feel merits attention. It is a turn-based RPG that touts a stress system, unlocking many skills, and of course, strategy. This does have a grid-based combat system, a system that is not my personal favorite, but may be yours. Sword Legacy Omen does have an appealing graphics style, as well as gameplay that doesn’t seem overly complex based on everything I’ve seen. If turn-based RPGs are for you, don’t forget Sword Legacy Omen, as it is released this week.

You can wishlist it on Steam here.

Release Date: August 13, 2018 (PC)

Donut County

How can you not be drawn in by Donut County? I just find this graphic style very appealing before knowing a thing about the game. Donut County is a puzzle game where you play as a hole and have to move around to drop things into it. It’s a bizarre concept of a game, but as you can see in the trailer, it is a lot more intriguing seeing it in action compared to reading it. I am always a fan of developers trying out new concepts or try to reinvent a concept, and Ben Esposito (developer) does exactly that with Donut County. I am most curious about the difficulty curve of the game. If you are a fan of puzzle games, definitely keep Donut County bookmarked for when it is released at the end of August.

You can wishlist it on Steam here.

Release Date: August 28, 2018 (PC, PS4)

Forged Battalion

Forged Battalion is a game that I have criminally not noticed up until recently. This is a real-time strategy game that should catch any RTS gamer’s attention. The first reason is that Petroglyph (developer) is made up of former Westwood developers, yes, that means former Command & Conqueor developers. The more important reason is that the game looks fun! Forged Battalion contains single player a story, a big tech skill tree to give the player customization, and multiplayer with dedicated servers. Watch the trailer to give you an idea of what a battle looks like, as it is packed with lots of action. Forged Battalion deserves your attention if you are a fan of RTS games, as it leaves Steam Early Access this week.

You can wishlist it on Steam here.

Release Date: August 14, 2018 (PC)

The King’s Bird

The King’s Bird is a game that I recently discovered, and the trailer is what sold me on this. At first glance by watching the trailer it appears to be a 2D version of Journey, coupled with a great musical background, but upon further inspection you really that many obstacles are being avoided through movement and momentum. The King’s Bird definitely gives me some Light Fall vibes, but if the controls are tight enough, and the game is frustrating I see this succeeding. The game touts five unique worlds with different themes, worlds kept secret by a tyrant and you move through them to discover the truth about your freedom. The King’s Bird will be a game that lives or dies based on controls, and I hope it delivers. The King’s Bird is scheduled for release on August 23, 2018.

You can wishlist it on Steam here.

Release Date: August 23, 2018 (PC)

Evergarden

Evergarden is a game I recently discovered and it has a very interesting concept for a puzzle game. It is set inside a narrative adventure where you combine plants to create new items. I am completely interested in this game because I have absolutely no idea what to expect, but I find the concept very appealing as a puzzle gamer. The game will also have daily challenges, as well as leaderboards. Definitely check out Evergarden if you are a puzzle gamer, as this could be an overlooked gem of 2018.

You can wishlist it on Steam here.

Release Date: August 16, 2018 (PC, iOS)
