Street Fighter V (PS4)
Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom

I would’ve never thought this would be my most disappointing game of the year. To stress, I like the game and since the launch, it’s getting better by adding more free content. The problem is how it started out. It was known from the beginning that Killer Instinct would be free to download, but had to pay for fighters. I was furious, but when I saw the plan in action it made sense, due to Microsoft wanting the game out at launch and Double Helix (at the time) found this as the only option. Compared to Street Fighter V, where you’re paying full price for a game with barebones content and you have a receipt for disaster.

I understand the excuse is having the game ready for fighting game tournaments, but I’ve seen this game get promoted on TV. Most of the audience seeing the ads are not fighting game enthusiasts. Because of this, the game was frowned upon until recent updates started rolling out, but for some it was too little too late. As much I would love to compare Killer Instinct’s launch vs Street Fighter V’s, the bottom line is that some felt cheated, while others abandon the game.

Like everybody else, I was excited to see a Mega Man successor get made by Keiji Inafune. Despite the drama that went on, I was still hoping that it wouldn’t distract from the final product. I removed all the negative reactions the game got and went in with an open mind. Metroid: Other M is widely hated, but I ended up liking the game. While I liked the new concept of absorbing enemies and the amount of extra content, it wasn’t enough. From stiff controls, visuals that feel like you’re playing a PS2 game, to beating the game to unlock co-op, I feel had the game kept the designs from earlier, added co-op from the beginning, and was honest, I feel this game would’ve been decent. Now people are reluctant to back crowdfunded games unless they show the goods early and let the backers know what they can expect.

Star Fox Zero (Wii U)

E3 2014 ended with Shigeru Miyamoto playing a Wii U Star Fox game blurred. I was excited to play a new Star Fox game until I saw gameplay of how the Wii U Gamepad will be used. While I liked the use of the Gamepad in my review, I know the game would’ve fared better had they added classic controls. The steep learning curve was a turn off for most people when I played the game at a friend’s house. The co-op is fun with player two using the Pro Controller to fire on enemies, while player one flies with the Gamepad. Moments like that are what I’ll miss with the Wii U. Instead of Team Fox coming back in style with awesome promotions, now the future is in limbo again. I hope Nintendo decides to give another company (*cough* Platinum Games *cough*) full control of the next game for the upcoming Nintendo Switch with traditional controls. I don’t want Team Fox to be forgotten, but I feel after Star Fox Zero, they’ll go back into Nintendo’s vault. Say hi to Wave Race for me.
