Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair Review (Vita)

When I originally heard of the Danganronpa series, I wondered how on earth this weird setting of a game would work. A talking killer bear, a murder mystery where high school students kill someone to survive, all trapped in a place where they can’t escape. It sounds like something crazy, straight up out of a dream you once had that swirls into a nightmare. This wonderfully stylized version of a murder mystery seems more like a point-and-click adventure game than a visual novel, making it one of the more inventive and truly immersive visual novels. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair follows the original, and is a fantastic sequel that captures all the intensity and fun the first had. With an entirely new cast and a new stage to play this killing game on, did Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair turn out as a great second game in this new franchise, or pale in comparison to the original?

Rocket League Review (PS4)

Just what exactly is Rocket League? A short answer would be, it’s the fusion of demolition derby and the popular sport of soccer. Now on paper, this might not sound like the best idea, but the talented folks at Psyonix are determined to prove that these two foreign elements can combine to make a highly enjoyable game. I had the opportunity to play the early access beta, and I found it to be highly enjoyable. I thought it would definitely be a huge hit, if given more polish. Fast forward to the game’s launch, I finally got my hands on the final product. So, was Rocket League’s potential fully realized, or was it a complete disaster?

Mortal Kombat X Review (PS4)

When I think of the Mortal Kombat series I have mixed emotions… Obviously I think back to my childhood and remember constantly being destroyed by my brother on Sega Genesis. I also think back to playing Mortal Kombat: Armageddon and Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, which is where I thought the series would die. After the success of the franchise reboot, Mortal Kombat (2011), I was really excited to get my hands on Mortal Kombat X. I was really curious to see if Mortal Kombat X would continue to lead the franchise back to its glory days.

Abyss Odyssey: Extended Dream Edition Review (PS4)

Abyss Odyssey: Extended Dream Edition is a remastered version of the original game, which was released last year on the last generation consoles and windows. It is a rogue-like style game with procedural generated levels. This means that after death, level layouts, enemies you encounter, and the goodies you find will be considerably different. The story is pretty straight forward; a warlock’s dreams is negatively infecting reality and it’s up to Katrien, a formidable warrior actually created from the warlock’s dreams, to venture deep into the abyss to find and defeat said warlock. This premise is not very original, but a solid gameplay experience is what players look for most in this type of game. So the burning question is, does Abyss Odyssey: Extended Dream Edition prove to be another solid entry in the rogue-like genre, or does it fall a bit short?

The Swindle Review (PC)

The Swindle is a 2D, side scrolling, stealth action, rogue-like. platformer. The goal is to break into randomly generated buildings to collect money by picking it up or hacking computers, then escape without getting killed by patrolling security robots. The player has to collect enough money to buy enough upgrades to attempt to steal “The Devils Basilisk,” a device that after 100 days will become operational. According to the game, “It’s surveillance capabilities will be total.” “Your career as a master burglar will be untenable.”

Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight Review (3DS)

Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight for Nintendo 3DS is a remake of Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard for the Nintendo DS. Fortunately for me, Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold was a brand new experience, since I had never played Etrian Odyssey II, or any other Etrian Odyssey game for that matter. How did this first-person dungeon crawling experience treat a new player to the Etrian Odyssey series?
