NES Remix Review (Wii U)

The announcement of this came from a decent Nintendo Direct showing the trailer and stating that the game is available to play now. This caught people off guard and wanted to see what this game is all about. For most people they loved how it took classic games and added a twist while others stated Nintendo is playing catch-up to mods that made games like this on PC long ago. Is NES Remix worth reliving those classic days of making up challenges, or should we just move on to something that is fresh and new?

Super Mario 3D World Review (Wii U)

Mario is to video games as Mickey is to Disney. That’s what goes through my mind when I think of the Mario Bros franchise. Today Mario’s name can be replaced with other characters since video games have become broader to mainstream appeal. Over the years, a new Mario game meant as a showoff for what the Nintendo hardware is capable of. As time went on, it seemed the Mario games were starting to lose their appeal (unless it’s a 2D side scrolling one). Mario has now become an annual release while the Zelda franchise has time to stay fresh.

After the showing of Super Mario 3D World at E3 2013, people were not impressed with the reveal stating that it looks like a copy and paste of Super Mario 3D Land that was released in 2012 for the Nintendo 3DS.

Once again, Nintendo proves that you can’t judge a book by its cover as it shows that this would be the first four player co-op 3D platforming game that uses elements from the past 2D and 3D Mario games.

Considering that the game was released the same day as Microsoft’s Xbox One, Nintendo was hoping to get those buyers to pick up a Wii U. Has this game brought a new idea to the Mushroom Kingdom or should we not check another castle?

DuckTales: Remastered Review (Wii U)

DuckTales Remastered BoxArt

Ask most people my age about DuckTales and you’ll get different responses. For me the TV series is in my top 5 of my favorite Disney animated series. Most people have this game in their best NES game lists. Staying close to the source material (TV series) though Scrooge’s outfit is a callback to the Carl Banks comics. The many uses of his cane and the outright difficulty of the game stand out, but what stands out the most is the soundtrack. I lost count of how many times I’ve heard people do remixes of the moon level of the game. DuckTales in gaming is right up there with Mario.

The chances of a remake seemed impossible due to Capcom and Disney staying quiet for all these years. So when the trailer was shown at the Penny Arcade Expo in early 2013, I was beyond excited. After learning that WayForward was making the game, my hopes for the game were set at the highest bar. Will DuckTales: Remastered become a found treasure we keep in our money bin? Or will the remake make our life like a hurricane to forget it existed?

Saints Row IV Review (Xbox 360)

Saints Row IV Boxart

On April Fools of 2012, Volition stated that the next game to tie people over till Saints Row IV would be an expansion pack called “Enter the Dominatrix” which involves an alien invasion. This was one April Fools gag that most people could see happening and it did for a while.

After cancelling the expansion by including elements into Saints Row IV some fans feel that the game has lost the tone of Saints Row 2 to appease the mainstream, while others feel this is a good move after seeing how crazy Saints Row 3 got. Could Saints Row IV bring back fans of the first two games, or just stick with the over the top game design?

Rayman Legends Review (PC)

The recent trend of new games that throw back to earlier eras of gaming has been a mixed bag. On the one hand, good 2D platformers can be great fun. On the other, it can get stale quick. How many variations on 2D platformers can they come up with? Rayman Legends, I’m happy to report, falls squarely into the former category. Building on the foundation laid by 2011’s Rayman Origins, Legends is a gorgeous, tough-as-nails package that has a lot to offer anyone who has ever enjoyed a 2D platformer.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Review (Wii U)

DonkeyKongBoxart

After the success of Donkey Kong Country Returns people were excited to learn that Retro Studios next game would be for Nintendo’s new system. Rumors were running rampant that it might be a new Metroid game or something completely new. When Nintendo revealed that the next game was a sequel to Donkey Kong Country Returns many were disappointed. Now that the game is released does the final product show we should have never underestimated the company, or should we still go bananas this isn’t a new game?
