Valkyria Chronicles 4 (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Steam)

Developer: Sega CS3
Publisher: Sega

Release Date: September 25, 2018

During E3, I learned that the sequel to a hidden gem of mine, Valkyria Chronicles 4, was not been released in the US, but was pushed back to September. I recently learned that the demo quietly dropped on Playstation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. I was tempted to download the Switch version, but went with the PS4 since the original game was released for Playstation 3. After searching for the demo on PSN’s “clever” layout, I was able to download it. How did the demo fare?

It’s been awhile since I played the first game, but after a refresher with the tutorial, I was back in action. It was like I never missed a beat. What made it even more amazing is that the data from the demo will transfer over into the full game with bonus content. The RTS/Third person hybrid works well with colorful visuals to give war a more upbeat look. There are new features I noticed, like capturing the enemies’ base to tide the favor of the battle. New weapons are here as well, with each person having strengths and weaknesses to each one. While the visuals are colorful, the story of war is still as dark as all war stories.

This demo left me wanting more and I hope with the game being available on multiple platforms it will help get the word out of this underrated franchise.

The Valkyria Chronicles 4 demo can be found on the PSN Store, Microsoft Store, and Nintendo Eshop.
